The Manor of 1850

The name makes quite a statement, don’t you agree. And yet, Lord of Snow the chalet somehow gets away with it. This is one of those “you want it the perfect ski holiday? Come and get it!” sort of places.

It is magnificent in style and yet unpretentious. It is magnificent in scale and yet fits charmingly into its privileged, ski-in ski-out position close to the Bellecôte slope and a short stroll from the village centre. And it magnificently offers a refuge where your ski holiday is polished to a shine by friendly, well-trained staff.

Spread out over six levels all connected by an in-house lift, its seven bedrooms provide luxurious accommodation for twelve adult guests and two children. Two of the doubles could each be awarded the title of master with vast, airy proportions, luxurious bathrooms with indulgent bath tubs and French doors to balconies. The other bedrooms are no less beautiful and some of them also treated to bath tubs. A children’s bunk-bed room with its own bathroom has the option of connecting to one of the doubles. Another double is designed also to make life easy for guests with reduced mobility.

Lord of Snow has taken chalet styling to another level and it’s a good one. Shall we call it Modern Alpine 2.0. It is unashamedly contemporary throughout with modern light timber set off by fabrics in colours like jewels. Bedrooms are individually finished with a wonderful cultural fusion of bright yet subtle accessories; artwork is bewitching. It is serenely uncluttered but incorporates nods to old luxuries. Heavy drapes over wide windows; antique pieces gently introduced here and there. Space blends imaginatively creating social corners (we love the square dining table) in the top floor open plan living area (with separate professional kitchen for the chef to focus). It continues through the levels past floors of bedrooms to meet up again in the adjoining cinema, billiards room and wine lounge on the lower ground. It embraces high-tech with vapour fireplaces in the living room and one of the master bedrooms, the ultimate blend of luxury technology and environmental respect. It might be Lord of Snow but it whispers Ibiza with its high-end sound system throughout.

Of course you aim for perfection. That spa is a dreamy space with spell-binding pastel-hued lights. The heated swimming pool is generous, with a hot tub, a sauna and a Hammam set around and fitness and treatment rooms. Your chef and staff prepare and serve breakfast every day of the week and dinner on six days. A chauffeur driven 8-seater vehicle is on-hand for in resort travel between 8am and 1am.

All this and yet the best thing, in our eyes, is that almost effortless access to the slopes of Courchevel.
